Grant to fund program on canal's history

January 25, 2009

The Washington County Free Library has announced it is the recipient of a $6,100 grant from the Maryland Humanities Council in partnership with the PNC Foundation.

The grant will fund panel discussions and the production of a Web site dedicated to the economic influence of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal on Washington County and vicinity.

The C&O Canal National Historical Park and the Western Maryland Regional Library will partner with the library to tell the story of life in the canal towns through historic photographs, newspapers, correspondence and oral history.

The online display will be a permanent feature on the Western Maryland Historical Library's Web site at www.whilbr.org. Three programs will be scheduled for May and June on the C&O Canal and its importance to the county and Western Maryland.
