CLEAR SPRING - Joseph William Gehr Sr., 91, of Clear Spring, Md., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at his home.

Born July 19, 1917, in Clear Spring, he was the son of the late William Russell and Laura Elizabeth Shupp Gehr.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Genevieve Bartles Gehr, in 2000.

He attended Charleton and Clear Spring schools.

In his earlier years, he farmed with his dad, then later was a self-employed farmer.

Joe also owned and operated Joe Gehr & Sons Trucking until his retirement.

He was a member of Two Top Fellowship Church in Mercersburg, Pa.

He was a member of Antietam Fire Co. of Hagerstown, Md., Eagles Club Inc. of Waynesboro, Pa., and The Improved Order of Red Men Conococheague Tribe 84 of Williamsport, Md.


He is survived by one daughter, Anna Mary Fritz and her husband, Robert, of Hagerstown; one son, Joseph William Gehr Jr. and his wife, Jeannie, of Clear Spring; one daughter-in-law, Merry Weber Gehr of Clear Spring; seven grandsons; two granddaughters; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; two nephews; and two cousins.

He was preceded in death by one son, Albert Russell Gehr; one sister, Mary Louise Freeze; one brother, Charles Gehr; and two great-grandsons.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The funeral home will be open Sunday after 1 p.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

Funeral services will be Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, with Pastor Steve Wagoner, Pastor Paul Martin and Pastor Len Smith officiating. Interment will be in Broadfording Cemetery, Hagers- town.
