James William Waugh, 90

FUNKSTOWN - James William Waugh, 90, a resident of Funkstown, Md., died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009.

Born July 1, 1918, in Funkstown, he was the son of the late Charles Edwin and Barbara Ethel Dixon Waugh.

He was preceded in death by his wife, June Elaine (Black) Waugh, on Dec. 22, 1997.

He served with the 9th Army Air Force, 82nd and 101st, Airborne Division in Africa, Sicily, Italy, England, France, Germany and South America. He received Battle Stars and Good Conduct medals during 3 1/2 years of Army life. He was a marksman sharpshooter.

He was a carpenter by trade. He was employed by Fairchild for 17 years, and retired in 1981. He went into the excavating and hauling business until his final retirement.

He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church for about 63 years.

He was a member of BPO Elks 378, Eagles of Waynesboro, Pa., Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 and the Western Maryland Sportsman's Club.

He is survived by nieces and nephews, Michael A. Waugh Sr., Philip D. Waugh, Eddie Waugh, Barbara Waugh Mullenix, Cathy Harple, Dorothy Mellot and Lori Hudlow; 13 great-nieces and -nephews; and 14 great-great-nieces and -nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary F. Waugh Goetz; two brothers, Charles M. Waugh and Gerald W. Waugh; and two nephews, Charles R. Waugh and Vaughn Goetz.

Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Dr. Stephen D. Robison will officiate. Burial will be in Funkstown Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
