A look at family-oriented events planned for 2009

(Editor's note: The following schedule changes have been announced since the original publication of this article.

o The March 6 performance by the University of Maryland's traveling gymnastics team, Gymkana Troupe, at Hagerstown Community College has been canceled.

o The March 29 performance by The National Marionette Theatre at HCC has been moved up to Sunday, March 8, at 3 p.m.

Mozart, magic, mime and the Monster Jam. Juggling and gymnastics. Acrobatics, animals and "Ali Baba."

This year's family-oriented arts and entertainment schedule takes place all over the Tri-State area and in a variety of venues. Many events are free; some require reservations. Call ahead to reserve spots.

Jan. 24 through April 25

"Rapunzel" will be performed at Way Off Broadway Children's Theatre near Frederick, Md.

Feb. 7

Visual artist and mime Michael Cooper, whose repertoire includes stilt dancing and handcrafted masks, will perform at The Maryland Theatre.

Feb. 19

Kinder Konzert with Maryland Symphony Orchestra Percussion Trio will perform at South Hagerstown High School.

Feb. 27

The Super Scientific Circus will perform at Weinberg Center for the Arts in Frederick.

March 1

The MSO will perform its family concert, Mozart's "Magnificent Voyage" at The Maryland Theatre.

March 7

NASA technician Neal Bachtell will talk about the current journey of the New Horizons spacecraft to Pluto and beyond at Discovery Station in downtown Hagerstown.

March 7

The Fred Garbo Inflatable Theater Company will bring visual comedy, dance, juggling and creative inflatable inventions to The Maryland Theatre.

March 8

The National Marionette Theatre will perform "Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves" at HCC's Kepler Theater.

March 12

Kinder Konzert with MSO String Quartet will perform at HCC's Kepler Theater.

March 14

An Evening of Comedy & Magic will be presented at The Maryland Theatre by Friends of Safe Place, Washington County's Child Advocacy Center.

March 14 and 15

Fifteenth annual Flower & Garden Show will be at HCC's ARCC. Features vendors, exhibitors, gardening seminars and demonstrations, floral design classes, children's gardening activities and more. Call 301-790-2800, ext. 346.

March 16

The Harlem Globetrotters will perform an exhibition game at HCC's ARCC.

March 28

The Washington County Teen Idol Competition will be on stage at The Maryland Theatre, which is cosponsoring the event along with Washington County Free Library.

March 29

Jack Hanna, who has brought his live-animal show to "Late Show with David Letterman," will do a show with live animals at The Maryland Theatre.

April 4

Ali Ghan Shriners Circus will perform two shows at HCC's ARCC.

April 7

The Luhrs Center in Shippensburg, Pa., hosts the CBS21 News Weather Summit, open to the public.

April 14

Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy, an imaginative and acrobatic circus, performs at Shippensburg University's H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center in Shippensburg, Pa.

April 16

Kinder Konzert featuring Clear Spring High School Reflections Show Choir will take place at HCC's Kepler Theater.

April 22

The Broadway musical "Annie" will be performed at the Luhrs Center in Shippensburg, Pa.

May 2 through 21

The annual Public School Art Exhibition will feature art by Washington County Public Schools' students. Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Hagerstown's City Park.

May 2 through Aug. 9

Way Off Broadway Children's Theatre will perform "Snow White" near Frederick, Md.

May 21

Kinder Konzert featuring Smithsburg High School Orchestra will take place at Smithsburg High's auditorium.

May 23 through June 21

Young Artists of the Home School Community will feature art by Washington County home-schooled students. Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Hagerstown's City Park.

July 17 through July 19

Monster Jam will be at Hagerstown Speedway, west of Hagerstown.

July 17 through 23

The Washington County Ag Expo & Fair will be held at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center south of Hagerstown. Entertainment includes amusement rides and a demolition derby.

Aug. 22 through Nov. 7

"Pinocchio" will be performed at Way Off Broadway Children's Theatre near Frederick, Md.

Oct. 31

The annual Alsatia Club's Mummers Parade will be held in downtown Hagerstown.

Nov. 14 through Jan. 9, 2010

"Mr. Willowby's Christmas Tree" will be performed at Way Off Broadway Children's Theatre near Frederick, Md.
