Winner nearly threw away $30K ticket

January 22, 2009

BALTIMORE -- Jamie Davis will think twice before throwing away any scratch-off tickets before checking them.

After scratching eight Maryland Lottery Blackout Bingo tickets Wednesday, the Hagerstown man didn't think he had any winners and proceeded to throw them in the trash at the store.

Luckily, the clerk at Myersville Exxon in Myersville, Md., told him that he should check them first, so Davis took them out of the trash to have them scanned.

One turned out to be a $30,000 winner.

"If I don't think they are winners, I always throw them out," Davis, 34, told lottery officials. "I can't imagine how many other winners I've thrown away."

Davis said he enjoys playing Keno and scratch-off lottery games. This is by far the largest amount he has ever won.

With his winnings, Davis plans to make payments on his motorcycle and put the rest in the bank.

His mother, who accompanied him to lottery headquarters, had one other request: "He should take us out for a nice steak dinner!"
