Fire company mourns loss



The Potomac Valley Fire Co. mourns the death of company president Caroline Martin, who died Jan. 3 after a brief illness.

The thoughts and prayers of the entire community are with Caroline's family and friends.

Fire company basket bingo



The Potomac Valley Fire Co. will hold a basket bingo Saturday, Jan. 24. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. and bingo starts at 1 p.m.

The company also will hold a pancake and sausage breakfast Saturday, Feb. 7, from 8 to 11 a.m. The company will serve pancakes, sausage, sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, coffee, milk and juice.

Potomac Valley Fire Co. members would like to remind everyone to check and replace the batteries in your smoke detectors.

St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Lappans invites the public to the first session of a nondenominational course called "Alpha," featuring a free dinner-and-movie format plus on-site child care, beginning Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

"Alpha" is an opportunity for nonchurchgoers, including atheists and agnostics, and churchgoers alike to enjoy a dinner together and see a video that presents historical and philosophical information about Christianity.

RSVP to the church at 301-582-0417, particularly if child care is needed and to provide the cooks with an approximate count for dinner.

Sharpsburg Little League registration



Sharpsburg Little League will hold registration in February for players 5 to 12 years of age at Sharpsburg Town Hall (above the library).

Registration will be Thursday, Feb. 12, and Friday, Feb. 13, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, Feb. 14, and Saturday, Feb. 21, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All players must bring a birth certificate or a copy of one and three proofs of residency (no P.O. boxes).

Registration fees are $20 for the first child and $15 for the second child. The third child is free.

A fundraiser raffle ticket packet will be handed out with 30 tickets for the first child or 50 per family if you have two or more children registering. A drawing of five cash prizes will be held opening day.

Umpire/rules clinic



Denny Hockensmith and Dave Grams will conduct a free clinic on the rules of Little League Baseball beginning Tuesday, Feb. 3 and continuing every Tuesday in February from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Church of Christ on Leitersburg Pike.

The clinic will cover the basics, as well as changes to the rule book, including new pitch count rules and the Bat Performance Factor (BPF), which must be stamped on all bats.

The clinic is free.

Blood pressure screenings



Merry Gehr will conduct blood pressure screenings Monday, Jan. 26, at the Senior Center at the Little Antietam Community Center at 40 Mount Vernon Drive.
