MODESTO, Calif. -- Elva Frances Benedict, 91, a resident of Parkview Christian Estates in Modesto, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson, Calif.

Born June 24, 1917, near Quincy, Pa., she was the daughter of Irvin P. and Minnie Good Benedict.

She attended Pigeon Hill School, Quincy High School and Waynesboro Business College. She studied nursing at Modesto Junior College and received an LVN certificate.

She worked at Memorial Hospital in Ceres, Calif., for more then 35 years before retiring.

She moved to Modesto in 1943.

She was a member of Old German Baptist Brethren Church, Modesto District.

She is survived by two sisters, Clara Benedict of Waynesboro and Alice Benedict of Chambersburg; three brothers, Marion Benedict of Waynesboro, Harlan Benedict of Chambersburg and Willis Benedict of Anderson, Ind.; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.


She was preceded in death by one sister, Rhoda Benedict; one brother, Welty Benedict; one infant brother; and two great-nephews.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Donald Hess and Harold Slothour will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery, with Fred Garber officiating.

The family requests the omission of flowers.
