Community Band to begin rehearsals

The Williamsport Community Band will begin its spring rehearsals Sunday, Feb. 8, at Williamsport Memorial Library from 2 to 4 p.m.

'Breakfast for Katie'

The Williamsport Athletic Boosters will hold a "Pancake Breakfast for Katie" Saturday, Feb. 7, from 7 to 11 a.m. in Williamsport High School's cafeteria to benefit Katie Stains, a senior WHS cheerleader.

Zumba classes to be offered

Two Zumba exercise classes will be offered at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 18313 Lappans Road, starting Wednesday, Jan. 28. The first class starts at 5:30 p.m., the second at 6:30 p.m. Anita Binder will be the instructor. The cost for eight weeks is $50 or $10 for drop-in classes (including first night.) Benefit games planned Feb. 21

Williamsport High School is planning an alumni men's basketball doubleheader to raise funds for the families of two WHS students who are battling cancer.

Potomac Playmakers

The Potomac Playmakers will open the season in its new home, the Academy Theater in Hagerstown, with an Agatha Christie musical spoof, "Something's Afoot," on Jan. 30, 31, Feb. 1, 5, 6, 7 and 8. All shows start at 8 p.m. except Sundays at 3 p.m. Call for reservations at 301-797-8182.

Williamsport-area cast members include Brady Myers, Tina McAllister, Cinnamon Rowland and Renee Peterson. Other cast members are Brian Heinrich, Andre Brown, Dick Hershey, Ralph Mauriello, David Woods and Peggy Hardinge. The play is directed by Ruth Ridneour of Williamsport, and the musical director, Jonas Dawson, is also from Williamsport.

Baseball clinic

Every Little League needs umpires. Local umpires Denny Hockensmith and Dave Grams will hold workshops teaching the rules of Little League baseball, covering the basics as well as the changes to the rulebook, including new pitch count rules.

The workshops will be held at the Church of Christ on Leitersburg Pike, starting Feb. 3 and continuing every Tuesday in February from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Before you purchase a new bat for your child, you need to know the Bat Performance Factor (BPF), which must be stamped on all bats.

Girls softball

The Washington County Girls Softball League will hold registration for girls in grades three through eight at Dick's Sporting Goods in the Centre at Hagerstown (Wal-Mart Shopping Center) on the following dates: Saturdays, Jan. 31; Feb. 14 and Feb. 28; from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and at Extra Innings in Hagerstown on Wednesdays, Feb. 18, and Feb. 25, from 5 to 8 p.m.; and Saturday, Feb. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration costs $40, due at signup.
