James E. O'Brien, 80, passed away peacefully on Jan. 16, 2009, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Md., following a short illness.

He was born Nov. 5, 1928, in New London, N.H., son of the late James and Ellen O'Brien.

He served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged Jan. 29, 1948.

He was a graduate of Tilton Academy and Colgate University.

He and his wife, Elizabeth, lived in Washington, D.C., and were owners of American Aluminum Co. In retirement, they moved to Hagerstown.

He was a talented athlete and was an active basketball coach. He sponsored many basketball clinics for youth programs throughout the Northeast.


He is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Elizabeth, of Hagerstown; his sister, Evelyn O. Kiernan and her husband, John; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

His beloved twin sisters, Mary and Margaret O'Brien, preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held in New London at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD 21740.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.
