Hubs use comeback trail to stop Catoctin

January 21, 2009|By JACK HILL III

The North Hagerstown boys' basketball team barely avoided an upset on Tuesday by using a comeback effort to squeeze out a 68-62 win over Catoctin.

"Honestly, I give Catoctin credit," North Hagerstown coach Kevin Hartman said. "They played well. They took it to us. They got easy baskets, easy layups and 3-point shots. They shot the ball well. We struggled all game. Fortunately, our seniors stepped up and finished the game for us."

Catoctin (2-9) led North Hagerstown (7-5) for most of the way in a fast-paced game. Catoctin led 57-55 with 5:10 remaining.

The Hubs closed with a 13-5 run to pull out the win. Senior Brent Bell started the game-winning run with a 3-pointer at the 5:03 mark to give the Hubs a 58-57 advantage they didn't relinquish. Bell scored nine of the Hubs' final 13 points.

"At the end of the game, we got some stops and some defensive rebounds," Hartman said. "Then we shot our free throws well. Once we got the lead in the fourth quarter, we did not give it back. We finished the game well."

Bell collected game-high totals of 25 points and five steals, while Joe Mattei got 11 points and four blocked shots for North Hagerstown. Mike Rivas pulled down nine rebounds, Tyler Spencer grabbed seven rebounds and Allen Sandberg dished off six assists for the Hubs.

Derek Szabados had 19 points and five assists, Kolby Maly connected for 17 points, including five of Catoctin's eight 3s, and Justin Albright tallied 10 points for the Cougars. Sean Reaver and Dylan May had five rebounds each for Catoctin.

"Our guys fought hard," Catoctin coach Ryan Oman said. "We were shooting the ball well. Their pressure forced us to make a few turnovers and that helped them to make their run. We got lazy on defense a few times. Towards the end of the game, their pressure took us out of our offensive flow. North was more careful with the ball in the crucial situations."

Maly got three of his 3-pointers in the first quarter as the Cougars raced out to a 23-14.

The Hubs cut into the lead in the second quarter to trail by only a 33-29 count at the half.

North was within 51-50 of Catoctin by the end of the third quarter.
