CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - James E. Fahnestock, 86, of Chambersburg, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at Menno Haven.

Born Sept. 30, 1922, in Mechanicsburg, Pa., he was a son of the late James O. and Ruth Grubbs Fahnestock.

He was a 1941 graduate of Chambersburg High School.

He retired from the federal government, where he worked as an engineering technician.

He served with the U.S. Army in World War II.

He was a member of Mount Pleasant United Brethren Church, Chambersburg.

He was a member of George Washington Lodge 143 F&AM, Chambersburg, Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46, BPO Elks Club 600, AARP and NARFE.


He is survived by his wife of more than 66 years, Betty S. Saunders Fahnestock; one daughter, Annette M. Smith of Newville, Pa.; three grandchildren, David L. Smith of Frederick, Md., James C. Smith of Tall Timbers, Md., and Jayme Block of Salisbury, Md.; and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, James D. Fahnestock.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg. The Rev. Garry Culler will officiate. Burial will follow in Norland Cemetery, where members of VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will conduct military graveside honors.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.
