Crash briefly shuts down I-70

January 20, 2009

FREDERICK, Md. -- Maryland State Police say the driver of a 2007 Kia apparently fell asleep and crossed into the median of Interstate 70 on Braddock Mountain, shutting down the westbound lanes around 8:30 this morning for an hour.

The vehicle then traveled back across the roadway and struck a rock embankment where it overturned. Three passengers, ages 5, 8 and 15, were able to climb from the vehicle with only minor injuries.

Sandra Horton-Badatumdal, 47, of Cumberland, Md., was listed in fair condition at the Shock Trauma Unit in Baltimore and is expected to be released Tuesday afternoon.

She had to be extricated by members of the Frederick County Fire Department, police said, and was later flown to Baltimore by medevac helicopter.

The children were all transported to Washington County Hospital as a precautionary measure and were listed in stable condition, police said.

The investigation is continuing.
