GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Franklin E. "Frank" Clevenger, 68, of Greencastle, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at Menno Haven, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Nov. 5, 1940, in Mercersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late George and Irene Carbaugh Clevenger.

He was a graduate of James Buchanan High School.

He retired from the former Mack Trucks Inc. in Hagerstown, where he worked as a machinist and forklift operator.

He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was a member and past president of New Franklin Ruritan Club, and held numerous offices and positions within Potomac District Ruritan, including lieutenant governor and district governor. He was awarded the Tom Downing Fellow award in 2002 for "unselfish personal effort." He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles in Waynesboro, Elks Club in Chambersburg and several other local veterans clubs.

He is survived by two children, Bryan Clevenger of Orrtanna, Pa., and Michelle Tarman of Chambersburg; two sisters, Mabel Koser and Brenda Sites; six brothers, Dean, George, Merle, Harry, Donald and Harold Clevenger; four grandchildren; and his special friend, Patti Butler of Boonsboro.


He was preceded in death by an infant son, Dwayne.

Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg. The Rev. Peter Emig will officiate. Burial will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, where members of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will conduct military graveside honors.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
