CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - George Showalter Keener, 69, of 1426 Oakwood Court, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2009, at Menno Haven.

Born Feb. 24, 1939, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late George M. and Esther Showalter Keener.

He was a self-employed dairy farmer, operating Keen-R-Lea Farm near Huyetts Crossroads until retiring in 1986.

He was a member of Salem Ridge Mennonite Church near Greencastle, Pa.

He was a member of the Mennonite Historical Association, served on the board of Shalom Christian Academy and was an amateur radio operator (K31WU).

He attended Parkinson's Support Group of Hagerstown.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Mary Martin Keener, whom he married Nov. 12, 1960; five children, Darwin H. Keener of Lancaster, Pa., Diane Lehman of Chambersburg, Denise Herr of Quarryville, Pa., G. David Keener of East Petersburg, Pa., and Dorinda Henesy of Hagerstown; and 13 grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Keener; and one grandchild.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Salem Ridge Mennonite Church, Greencastle. The Rev. Roger I. Martin will officiate. Burial will follow in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
