James Edward Padilla, 84, of Langley Drive, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 21, 1924, in New York City, he was the son of the late James Stephen and Monsita Kercado Padilla.

He was a graduate of the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts in Newark, N.J.

He was an artist and photographer.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. Being a musician, he was asked by his colonel to form a band playing music of the 1940s.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Dispenzieve Padilla; two daughters, Susan G. Baer of Terre Haute, Ind. and Judith A. Wollmann of Damascus, Md.; two sons, James J. Padilla of Hillsborough, N.J. and Richard E. Padilla of Fayetteville, Ark.; and six grandchildren.


Graveside service will be private in Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery.

Arrangements are by J.L. Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg.
