MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - The Rev. Ellis L. Hess, 83, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at his home.

Born Oct. 6, 1925, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late Lee R. Hess and Vernie Amelia Light Hess.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Foster Hess.

He was a former pastor at Williamsport Assembly of God Church, and founder and pastor at Inwood (W.Va.) Assembly of God Church.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Faith Tabernacle Assembly of God.

He is survived by one daughter, Amelia A. Shank; five sons, Ellis E. Hess, Kenneth R. Hess, Ronald L. Hess, Curtis W. Hess and Philip M. Hess; one brother, Roy G. Hess; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by one sister, Nancy B. Hess; one brother, Clifford Hess; one grandson; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at South Berkeley Funeral Chapel in Inwood. The Rev. Donald Preston and the Rev. Arnold Brown will officiate. Military graveside services will be in Tuscarora Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
