He was born on June 25, 1938, in Upton, Pa., and was the son of Arlene V. Swope and Russell C. Ebersole (both deceased).

He graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1956 and continued his education, working toward a bachelor's degree in criminology at Hagerstown Community College and the University of Maryland.

He proudly served, with distinction, in the United States Air Force, Security Service from January 1958 until he retired, with 20 years of service in January 1978. Subsequent to his military career, he and his wife Pauline purchased and operated the family business, Pet's Vacationland in Funkstown until 1995. He was a Free Mason, a member of the Morris Frock Post 42, American Legion, an avid hunter and fisherman, and a member of the Greencastle and Waynesboro Sportsman's Clubs.

Richard was a loving, caring, compassionate husband and father; a true friend, who had a big, generous heart and was both respected and loved by those who knew him.

He is survived and will be eternally loved by his wife of nearly 50 years, Pauline Ann; two daughters, Leni Herman of Santa Anna, Calif., and Cindy Clark of Jacksonville, Fla., plus two sons, Kory Lon Tydon of San Clemente, Calif., and Russell L. Ebersole of Hagerstown.
