Lions, Eagles split hoops doubleheader

January 13, 2009|By Jack Hill III

Broadfording pulled out a 46-42 victory over Heritage Academy on Tuesday night.

In an earlier girls game, Heritage raced past Broadfording, 66-20.

"To win tonight, we had to exceed Heritage's intensity and hustle," Broadfording boys coach Bernie Clutz said. "I felt that we accomplished that. We also emphasized a structured man offense. In that offense, we wanted to attack the basket. Pete Cradduck and Elijah Colliflower gave us a big lift off of the bench in every facet of the game."

Senior forward Armando Miller had 15 points, six rebounds and four steals for Broadfording (8-6, 4-1). Gabe Hirsch had seven points, seven steals and six rebounds. Cradduck (nine) and Colliflower (seven) combined to score 16 points off the bench.

Travis Barthalow scored 15 points, Andrew Hendershot had 11 and Cody Butts added 10 for Heritage Academy (10-2, 5-1). Andrew Harrell grabbed six rebounds.

"Broadfording played very well and very hard tonight," Heritage coach Mike Kidd said. "I think we matched their intensity, but we had a couple of turnovers at crucial times and we didn't shoot the ball as well as I liked. It was a game that went down to the wire and it was fun to be involved in."

The score was tied at 38 with 5:30 remaining before the Lions outscored the Eagles 8-4 down the stretch.

Cradduck got a basket, Miller sank one of his two foul shots and Hirsch made both of his free throws to give Broadfording a 43-38 advantage with 35 seconds left.

After Barthalow made 1 of 2 foul shots for the Eagles, Hirsch made 1 of 2 free throws for the Lions to extend the lead to 44-39 with 12 seconds left.

Barthalow drilled a 3-pointer to slice the lead to 44-42 with 5 seconds remaining. But Miller made both of his free throws with 3 seconds to go to seal the win for the Lions.

In the girls game, Heritage senior point guard Morgan McIntire outscored Broadfording by herself, scoring 22 points to lead the Eagles (11-2, 6-1). McIntire added nine steals, five rebounds and three assists.

"Our coach talks to us about defense," McIntire said. "He tells us to watch our opponents' hips, so we can tell what direction they are going. I was able to get some steals. Once I did that, I was able to turn them into easy layups."

"Morgan is shooting well," Heritage coach Ed Dorsey said. "When she is on, our offense is that much better. She is definitely our offensive leader. With the nine steals that she had, she also stepped up on the defensive end of the floor."

Jessica Gaylor had 13 points, while Brianna Dorsey added 10 points, eight rebounds and eight steals for the Eagles.

Broadfording is 0-13, 0-7.
