Smithsburg Elementary holds geography bee

The Smithsburg Elementary School geography bee was held Jan. 8.

The finalists were Julia Clark, Britney Cruickshank, Jacob Epstein, Bailey Hovermale, Brandon Lee, Erica Lindsay, Spencer Prete, Bryce Scharenbroch, Isaac Stottlemyer and Jacob Walter.

The winners were: third place - Julia Clark; second place - Britney Cruickshank; and first place - Bailey Hovermale.

Skip Wizards

The Skip Wizards, a student group from Frederick County Public Schools, will present an exhibition of jump rope skills and tricks at Smithsburg Elementary on Wednesday, Jan. 21, for students in prekindergarten through grade five.

Healthy sessions

First Place 4health, a Christian weight loss and Bible study, will begin new sessions this month on Wednesday mornings and Thursday evenings at Maranatha Brethren Church, 19835 Scott Hill Drive, just off Jefferson Boulevard in Hagerstown.

Little Sluggers

Smithsburg Little Sluggers, which is sanctioned through Cal Ripken Baseball, is holding registration for the upcoming season. Children 4 to 15 are eligible to play in the league. Registration will be held Friday, Feb. 13, from 7 to 9 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 14, from 10 am to 1 p.m.; Friday, Feb. 20; 7 to 9 p.m.; and Saturday, Feb. 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All registrations will be held at the Smithsburg Fire Hall, 22 N. Main St.

All current and new players must register. Please bring birth certificate and $35 for one child/$65 for more than one child, for registration.

Youth lacrosse

The Smithsburg Youth Lacrosse Club is holding signups for the outdoor lacrosse season.

Signups will be held at the Smithsburg Fire Hall, 22 N. Main St. on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesday, Feb. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. The league is open to boys and girls ages 5 to 14. The season begins in March.
