Shepherd U. hires police chief

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Scott R. Beckner has been named police chief at Shepherd University. He will begin his duties March 9.

Beckner was a member of the Michigan State University Police Department since 1991, most recently serving as special events lieutenant.

He also served as the Mid-Michigan Police Academy coordinator at Lansing Community College.

Prior to his stint at Michigan State, Beckner was an officer on the East Lansing, Mich., and Grand Blanc City, Mich., police departments. He also serves on the character and fitness committee of the State of Michigan Bar Association, where he hears cases of misconduct involving current and prospective attorneys.

Beckner earned a J.D. from Michigan State University College of Law, and a master of science degree and bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice from Michigan State.

He graduated from the Northwestern University Police Staff and Command School and has also taken courses to qualify as a professional emergency manager.
