Shopping center on track to open

January 07, 2009|By MATTHEW UMSTEAD

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Retailers at a shopping center under construction near Martinsburg are on schedule to begin opening in July, according to sources familiar with the project.

Berkeley County Development Authority executive director Stephen L. Christian said Wednesday that the developers of The Commons near Exit 12 of Interstate 81 had confirmed that all nine "anchors" of the shopping center had signed pre-lease agreements.

Developer John M. Abernathy of AIG Baker Development LLC said Wednesday he could not announce the stores that would be in the plaza. Sources familiar with the project, however, indicated that Bed Bath and Beyond, Best Buy, Books A Million, Dick's Sporting Goods, Michaels, PetSmart, Staples, Target and TJ Maxx, would be the anchor retailers.

Berkeley County Planning Director Stefanie Allemong said Wednesday that permits for Target, Books A Million, Staples, PetSmart and Dick's Sporting Goods were on file with the county.

In October 2007, developers of the plaza said the 45-acre shopping center project would cover about 425,000 square feet of building space for eight major national retailers and 20 to 25 smaller tenants.

A new traffic signal is expected to be installed at the entrance to the plaza from W.Va. 45 (Apple Harvest Drive).
