Smithsburg EMS gets 90 calls in Dec.

SMITHSBURG -- During the month of December, Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to 90 calls for service, bringing the 2008 total to 1,064 responses, according to Assistant Chief James Ulrich.

SEMS personnel responded to 111 calls for trouble breathing, 122 for chest pain/heart problems, and 104 vehicle and pedestrian accidents in 2008. The department also handled 28 transfers to other stations during 2008.

Of the 1,064 calls for the year, 250 were in Smithsburg town limits and 131 were to the Leitersburg area.

Mutual-aid calls to other counties included 125 to Frederick County, Md., and 46 to Franklin County, Pa.

Another 97 calls were in the area served by Hagerstown Community Rescue Service, 70 calls in the Mount Aetna area and 54 to the Cascade area.

A total of 714 patients were transported to hospitals after being treated by Smithsburg EMS personnel.
