Student artists sought for art competition

Contemporary School of the Arts & Gallery will sponsor a children's art competition "Winter in Hagerstown." The competition is open to all artists in any media. Prizes will be awarded in three age groups: elementary (first through fifth grade); middle (sixth through eighth grade); and high school (ninth grade through 12th). There is no fee charged for submitting art. Entries must be on the theme "Winter in Hagerstown" and delivered to the gallery at 4 W. Franklin St. in Hagerstown by Thursday, Jan. 15. The opening reception is from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. For information, call 301-791-6191 or e-mail

Summer play camps offered in West Virginia

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Commission is sponsoring summer play camps at Morgan's Grove Park, Sam Michaels Park and Wright Denny Elementary School. Each site will be supervised by trained staff and will offer a variety of recreational opportunities for children this summer. Arts and crafts, games, sports and more will be offered. The program is designated for children ages 6 to 14. Camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Tentative camp dates will be Monday, June 15, to Friday, Aug. 7. The cost is $75 per week. Additional fees may apply for field trips and special events. Registration will be taken starting Monday, Feb. 2, 2009.

Contestants needed for two international titles

Contestants are being sought for Miss Teen Washington County International 2009 and Miss Pre Teen Hagerstown International 2009.

The Miss Teen Washington County International 2009 pageant will be Friday, April 3, and Saturday, April 4. The winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to Chicago to compete in the national competition.

Applicants must be between 13 and 18 years old and live or attend school in Maryland. Contestants will compete in personal interview, aerobic wear, fun fashion and evening gown.

Miss Pre Teen Hagerstown International 2009 will compete in the Miss Pre Teen Maryland International Pageant. Applicants must be 10 years old by Friday, April 3, 2009, and not turn 13 before July 2009. The contestants will be competing in onstage introduction, fun fashion wear and formal wear (evening gown). There is no talent or bathing suit competition. The winner will win a trip to Chicago to compete in the national competition.
