Exposure suspect sought in Md., Pa.

WILLIAMSPORT -- A man has been exposing himself to residents at the Homewood at Williamsport retirement center on Virginia Avenue for two years and the Washington County Sheriff's Department has a suspect in the case, a department spokesman said Tuesday.

Police have an arrest warrant charging Gary Wayne Deavers, 54, with two counts of indecent exposure, said Detective Greg Alton.

Deavers' last known place of residence is Harrisonburg, Va., Alton said.

The suspect typically is either sitting in a car or standing outside it when he speaks to mostly female residents outside the retirement center at 16505 Virginia Ave., police said.

The man asks residents about a fictitious address when he exposes himself, Alton said.

There were nine incidents in 2006, four in 2007 and eight last year, Alton said.

Alton said it was hard to catch the individual until Dec. 2, when someone got a license plate number from the suspect's car. That led investigators to Deavers, Alton said.

The two counts of indecent exposure in the warrant are for an incident that occurred Nov. 28 and for another that happened last May, Alton said.

Homewood at Williamsport is on 28 acres. The tree-lined campus is designed to give residents a home-like atmosphere, according to the center's Web site.

Police in Chambersburg, Pa., said they are looking at Deavers as a suspect in an April 19, 2008 incident at 740 Norland Ave., Cottage Green Senior Association.

A resident reported that a white male wearing only a red T-shirt and red G-string approached a female resident while she was seated on her front porch.

That incident is believed to be related to numerous similar incidents that have occurred throughout the Chambersburg area at nursing homes and retirement communities since 2006, police said.

In June, warrants were issued in Pennsylvania charging Deavers with three counts of open lewdness and three counts of disorderly conduct related to the April incident were obtained.

He is described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, 213 pounds, with blue eyes and gray/brown hair. He might be operating a green Dodge Caravan with Virginia registration.
