January 05, 2009

WALKERSVILLE, Md. -- The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office said a Walkersville man who died from injuries he sustained in a fire at his home had gone back inside to save a family pet.

Michael Aquino, 60, discovered the fire Sunday night and got his family out safely, then went back in the house, according to a fire marshal's office news release.

Three other family members suffered smoke inhalation, but their injuries don't appear to be life-threatening, the news release says.

The fire at 54 Maple Ave. was reported shortly before 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. It started in the first-floor living room of the two-story, wood-frame, single-family home, but the cause wasn't known.

Fifty firefighters responded. It took 20 minutes to control the fire, the news release says.

The fire marshal's office says there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

The fire caused an estimated $100,000 worth of damage.
