MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - William L. Appel Jr., 81, of Mechanicsburg, died Friday Jan. 2, 2009.

Born May 15, 1927, he was the son of the late William L. Appel Sr. and Catherine Mull.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Ott, whom he married in 1947.

He retired after 30 years of service as a state corrections officer at the state penitentiary in Camp Hill, Pa.

He served as a military police officer during World War II.

He was a member of American Legion Post 612 in St. Thomas, Pa., Eureka Lodge 302 F&AM, Valley Forest No. 43, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Harrisburg, Pa., St. Aloysius Club, Steelton, Pa., and Mechanicsburg Men's Club.

He is survived by one daughter, Nancy Scott of Mechanicsburg; three sisters, Cathy Jones, Janet Stone and Hazel Baer; and two grandchildren.


He was preceded in death by one son, William Appel; and two sisters, Mabel McPherson and Lois Stepler.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg, Pa. The Rev. Gale Gregor will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
