January 05, 2009

MERCERSBURG, Pa. -- A search for a missing man this morning in Peters Township ended with the discovery of his body, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

State police said they received a call from the Greencastle (Pa.) Police Department for help in trying to find the 64-year-old Greencastle man. The state police Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) was called in to assist in the search, which ended at about 9 a.m. with the discovery of the body in the area of Tower Road in Peters Township.

Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner said the man was being sought because he had threatened to harm himself. The body was found off the road on Fore Trail, he said.

The Franklin County Emergency Management Agency, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and fire and ambulance personnel and fire police from St. Thomas, Mercersburg and McConnellsburg assisted in the search, police said.
