Vandals smash up collision center

January 05, 2009

Five vehicles inside Hagerstown collision center for repairs were used to drive into offices and equipment inside the facility early Sunday, causing thousands of dollars in damages, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies believe the vandalism occurred after someone broke into the collision center at 17500 York Road. The five vehicles were also driven into each other during the incident, the release said.

Deputies responded to Massey Auto Collision at about 4 a.m. after a resident on Greenmount Road told authorities he heard glass break and an alarm go off, the release said.

When deputies arrived at the center, they found an unoccupied vehicle with its engine running, the release said.

A sixth vehicle, which was being repaired at the shop, was found near Capstone Drive near Wal-Mart, the release said.

A motive for the incident is unclear, Sgt. Doug White said Sunday night, adding that there have been no previous problems reported at the business.

White said it appears the damage to the business had been occurring for an extended period of time during the nighttime hours.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to call the sheriff's department at 240-313-2100.

A $500 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case, the release said.
