Hospital employees donate gift cards

January 04, 2009

More than 100 employees at Washington County Hospital donated $15 Weis gift cards to Food Resources Inc., a local nonprofit organization that provides food to individuals in the Tri-State area to combat hunger.

Ruth Anne Callaham, executive director of Food Resources, was presented with $1,665 in gift cards, just in time for the holidays, she said.

"The demand in our community is huge during this week alone," said Callaham.

"When I heard what the hospital employees were doing, I was amazed. It's a moment when you realize the significant generosity of others."

Raymond Grahe, vice president of finance at Washington County Hospital, said the hospital gives supermarket gift cards to all of its employees as a holiday gift each year.

"This year, we had a few employees contact us and ask if they could donate their gift card to someone who would need it more than they would."

"Food Resources immediately came to mind," said Joyce Crouse, purchasing manager at Washington County Hospital. Once the recipient of the donation was selected, the hospital opened up the opportunity to all of its employees.

"It's a very powerful thing," Callaham said. "It goes a long way to meeting the need in our community."
