John F. Eavey, 91

John Fillmore Eavey, 91, of 617 Medway Road in Hagerstown, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Nov. 20, 1917, in Sharpsburg, he was the son of the late John Wesley and Idella Cordelia Smith Eavey.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Izer Gearhart Eavey, in 1986.

He was a graduate of Boonsboro High School.

He retired in 1982 from Pangborn Corporation in Hagerstown after more than 12 years of employment.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church in Hagers-town.

He was a member of The Improved Order of Red Men Conococheague Tribe 84 of Williamsport, and AMVETS Post 10, Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, W.D. Byron VFW Post 1936 and the Society of the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America Inc., all of Hagerstown.


He is survived by one son, John L. Eavey of Hagerstown; a special friend, Virginia Bentz of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Cecelia E. Gruber; and three brothers, Carl F. Eavey, James L. Eavey and Rudolph R. Eavey.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, Williamsport. The Rev. Jerry Lowans will officiate.

Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, which will open at 1 p.m.
