Ballroom dancing set for Friday

The Jim Powers Ballroom Dance Party will be Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Maugansville Ruritan Club building on Maugans Avenue. Admission costs $4 per person.

To help students chart their path to college, the University System of Maryland has created Way2GOMaryland, which offers information about choosing courses in middle school and high school; participating in extracurricular activities; paying for college; and exploring college campuses.

Child care course offered through HCC

Hagerstown Community College's Center for Continuing Education will once again offer the next installment of its child care certification courses for the spring semester.

"Communication Skills for Child Care Professionals" is a new course that is offered on Saturdays from Jan. 10 to Jan. 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on HCC's main campus.

The course is designed for child care professionals as an introduction to the basic concepts needed to develop strong communication skills for working in a child care center.

Topics include speaking, writing, interpersonal communication strategies and critical techniques, with a special emphasis on communication with parents and co-workers, as well as the communication issues that typically occur in a child care center.

"Communication Skills for Child Care Professionals" is required by the Maryland Office of Child Care for child care center prelicensing for those entering the field after July 1, 2008, and may also be used for child care professionals who are continuing their education.

MLK event to be held at HCC on Jan. 19

Hagerstown Community College will sponsor its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Celebration on Monday, Jan. 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Kepler Theater at HCC.

The celebration will begin with a musical performance by the Greater Campher Temple Gospel Choir and conclude with a dramatic rendition of Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech, performed by the Rev. Darin Mency.

The event will also include musical, dramatic and video performances, as well as poetry readings.

Students, staff and faculty are involved in planning this event, which is free and open to the public.
