Campers crowned

WILLIAMSPORT -- The solid defense of the Allegany Campers made the Hedgesville Eagles' offense non-existent.

As a result, Allegany beat Hedgesville 57-31 on Tuesday afternoon in the championship game of the 22nd annual Richard E. Doub Ladies Classic at Williamsport High School.

"We just got outplayed in every phase of the game," Hedgesville coach Ben Merica said. "They were tough from the get-go. They started dominating us in the first quarter and they kept us from getting into our offense. We missed a lot of layups in the first quarter. Allegany certainly deserves the victory."

It was the Campers' second title in the last three years in the tournament.

It was also the second time in the last three years that Allegany senior point guard DeTonia Degross was voted the tournament MVP. Degross had 15 points, seven steals and seven rebounds in the title game.

Jenna Mathews scored a team-high 16 points, Leah Wormack pulled down nine rebounds and Kelly Baker grabbed seven rebounds for Allegany (6-2).

Greyson Brooks finished with 13 points and eight rebounds for Hedgesville (6-2).

The Campers took control from the beginning, building an 11-0 lead in the first 6:06. The Eagles could not get any closer than nine points the rest of the way.

The Campers' defense held the Eagles' offense to just two points in the first quarter and just four points in the fourth.

n In the consolation game, Williamsport (3-5) ended its five-game losing streak with a 58-18 win over Broadfording (0-9).

Kelly Beard and Kayla Ewing scored 12 points each, while Hannah Cole hauled in 13 rebounds for Williamsport. Brittany Malott, Allison Gulnac and Beard grabbed six rebounds each for the Wildcats.

Ariana Litten led the way for Broadfording with nine points on a trio of 3-pointers and six rebounds. Hannah Young pulled down seven rebounds for the Lions.

Williamsport led 29-3 after 13 minutes and did not let Broadfording score more than six points in any quarter.

"It's good to get a win," Williamsport coach Chris Malott said. "We got everybody in and spread the wealth. We were trying to get everybody to score. It was a good team effort. Our defense was effective. I think that we are going to get better as the season goes along."
