Draper belongs to Leopards

SMITHSBURG -- James Buchanan's girls basketball team applied the heat, but Smithsburg barely broke a sweat.

The Leopards' 'AA' team made the Rockets pay for their pressure defense by hitting 77 percent of their free throws in a 61-34 thrashing that gave Smithsburg the 10th annual Pap Draper Classic championship Tuesday.

"When they press you, you have to make them pay for it at the free throw line," said Smithsburg coach Katy Barnhart.

Smithsburg's 'A' team made it a clean sweep with a 40-34 victory over St. Maria Goretti in the consolation matchup.

* Trailing 29-12 at the half, James Buchanan -- led by three Sarah Harryman buckets -- closed the gap to 33-23 early in the third period.

But the Leopards finished the quarter with a 16-3 run -- sparked by 10 of 13 shooting from the line -- for a 49-26 lead entering the fourth quarter. Katie Sprecher, who led all scorers with 25 points, made all seven of her free throw attempts.

While the Rockets were dominating the glass at their offensive end, they were unable to convert many of their second and third attempts thanks to the intimidating presence of Sara Rishell in the middle of the Leopards' 2-3 zone.

"It was really tough inside," said Sprecher. They're a very good offensive rebounding team."

Except for the brief third-quarter run, the Rockets were unable to get anything going offensively, hitting just 14 of 65 attempts from the floor.

"We were just a little bit out of sync tonight, both offensively and defensively," said JB coach Matt Piper. "It was just a weird game tonight."

Marissa Lupersbeck added 13 points for Smithsburg, while every Leopard scored at least two points.

* In the consolation game, Elisa Owens scored six of her game-high 14 points in the second half, and Danielle Beaver added five as Smithsburg kept Goretti at bay.

The Gaels, behind Cassie Rzomp and Maggie Garvey, closed a 19-6 halftime deficit to 30-26 midway through the fourth period, but failed to get any closer.
