Scouts hike, learn about surveying

December 28, 2008

The Mason-Dixon Council of the Boy Scouts of America, together with the Maryland Society of Surveyors, hosted a Maryland surveyors hike Oct. 18 at Pen Mar Park.

The members of the Appalachian Chapter of the Maryland Society of Surveyors gave the history of the local area. The Scouts used modern surveying equipment and learned about the equipment used by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon as they surveyed the Mason-Dixon line. Robert Banzoff portrayed Mason and Wayne Twigg portrayed Dixon, showing the Scouts the early compasses and methods used to survey the land..

The group hiked to the 91-line marker and heard about the history and reason for the markers. Then they hiked the Appalachian Trail from Pen Mar to Smithsburg.

The Mason-Dixon Council serves the youth of Washington, Franklin and Fulton counties.
