SOMERSET, Pa. -- Dorothy Pile Bittner, 86, of Somerset, and formerly of Gray, Pa., died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2008, at The Patriot.

Born July 4, 1922, in Friedens, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Russell M. and Ruth E. Carver Pile.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Bittner.

She was a 1940 graduate and valedictorian of Shanksville-Stonycreek High School.

She was a retired postmaster in Gray.

She was a member and former Sunday school teacher at Friedens Lutheran Church.

She was a member of Stoystown Lioness Club, where she received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award; a former volunteer of the American Cancer Society and R.S.V.P.; a former member of Somerset Order of the Eastern Star; and a Salute to Women honoree in Somerset County, Pa.


She is survived by three children, R. Craig Bittner, Kim Bittner and Cynthia Barron, all of Somerset; six siblings, Kathryn Carter and Thelma Miller, both of Somerset, Jean Hittie of New Freedom, Pa., Patricia Gebhart and Karl Pile, both of Hagerstown, and William Pile of Highlands Ranch, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Susan Von Dolteren and Susanne Zatko; and two brothers, Dalton Pile and Cletus Pile.

A service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Friedens Lutheran Church. The Rev. Edward V. DeVore will officiate. Burial will be in Somerset County Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Friday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown. The viewing will be Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.
