For the first 26 minutes, it was anybody's game.

But South Hagerstown's boys basketball team owned the final six minutes, closing the door on North Hagerstown by scoring the final 22 points of the contest for a 62-45 win Tuesday night in an MVAL Piedmont game at South.

"We were just able to force some turnovers in the fourth quarter," Rebels coach Kevin Naylor said. "That was one way that we were looking to score. We were trying to get some steals and some transition buckets. We knew that we had to keep the ball in our best ball handlers' hands. We wanted to make sure that once we got up we were able to take care of the basketball and get some easy shots."

The Hubs were leading 45-40 before the Rebels started their game-ending streak.

Sophomore Devonte Morel's pair of baskets reduced the deficit to 45-44 before Shane Santell drilled a 3-pointer to give the Rebels the lead for good at 47-45 with 3:43 to go.

South's offense just kept flowing. Morel had eight points and Santell added six in the final quarter for the Rebels.

"South won the game because they did what they needed to do to win it," Hubs coach Kevin Hartman said. "We missed opportunities and they capitalized on our missed opportunities. It wasn't just one person. Everybody on the team had missed opportunities."

Senior forward Antoine Malone had 15 points, 13 rebounds, five steals and five assists for South (3-2, 1-1). Jason Chase scored 13 points and Morel added 12.

"It was a really good win for us," Naylor said. "It was a great team effort. I am proud of my team. We finally settled into some offensive sets. We made sure that we played strong defense in both halves."

Joe Mattei finished with 17 points, six rebounds and four blocks for North (4-2, 2-1). Brent Bell had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

In the game's first four minutes, the Rebels took a 13-2 lead as Chase scored seven points.

But the Hubs made a battle out of it, answering back with eight straight points to narrow the gap to 13-10 with 39 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Rebels scored seven straight points to extend their lead to 20-10 just 26 seconds into the second quarter.

The Hubs responded with their own streak of seven points to chop the lead down to 20-17 with six minutes remaining in the first half. By halftime, the Hubs had tied the score at 26.

There were a few lead changes in the second half until the Rebels' explosion.
