GREENCASTLE, Pa. -- Charles R. Adams Jr., 87, of 3571 Conococheague Lane, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center of complications from heart bypass surgery earlier that day.

Born Jan. 3, 1921, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles Ray Adams Sr. and Anna Grace Noll Adams.

He graduated from the former Washington Township School.

He worked at Beck and Benedict Hardware in Waynesboro for 25 years and for Waynesboro Electric for 20 years as an appliance repairman.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He received a Purple Heart and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign medal with five bronze stars.

He was a member of Macedonia United Brethren Church in Greencastle.

He was a member of AMVETS Post 224 of Chambersburg, and Harry D. Zeigler VFW Post 6319 and Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion Post 373, both of Greencastle, Moose Lodge 1191 of Waynesboro, and the DAV, among other organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Winifred K. Rider Adams, whom he married in 1955; one sister, Shirley A. Aul of Greencastle; one brother, Earl R. Adams of Greencastle; one niece, Teresa Hollinger and two nephews, Van Adams and Jeff Adams, whom he helped raise; one stepgrandson; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Katherine M. Barmont; one sister, Margaret Kline; and two brothers, Kenneth Adams and Paul Adams.

Services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle. The Rev. Gayle L. Ruble Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg, with military honors by the Chambersburg VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, where the Greencastle VFW will hold a memorial service at 7:30 p.m.
