Man's body found near City Park

December 23, 2008

Hagerstown Police said they found a deceased man's body on Monday on CSX railroad property near City Park.

Sgt. David Long said Monday night that police found an ID with the man that indicated he was 55 years old, but they were trying to verify his identity before releasing his name.

Police said in a press release that the man appeared to have been homeless and might have died of exposure.

Officers found two camps set up by homeless people about 50 yards from where the man's body was found, Long said.

Another homeless person alerted police about the body, he said.

The man, who was Hispanic, was found in an embankment, about 30 yards away from railroad tracks, police said.

The spot is about a quarter-mile west of the Hager House at City Park, police said.

Police responded about 4 p.m.

The temperature at the time was about 21 degrees, according to Hagerstown weather observer Greg Keefer's Web site.

Long said the man was not dressed in warm enough clothes to safely be outside for a while.

Community Rescue Service helped recover and remove the body.
