December 23, 2008

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- A Shippensburg, Pa., man faces charges of sexually assaulting a girl over the past two years and with sexually assaulting his daughter more than two decades ago.

A preliminary hearing was scheduled Tuesday for the 55-year-old man in Franklin County Central Court, but has been continued until Jan. 13, Assistant District Attorney Lauren Sulcove said. The Herald-Mail is withholding the name of the man in order to protect the identity of the victims in the case.

The man is charged with rape of a child, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and indecent assault, according to the criminal complaint involving the 8-year-old girl. When the man's daughter discovered he had been charged with molesting the girl, she reported that he had molested her between 1983 and 1990 and he was charged with incest.

The 8-year-old told Pennsylvania State Police that the man had molested her over a two-year period at his home, the affidavit of probable cause stated. The girl is the niece of the man's daughter, police said.

The daughter, now in her 30s, learned of the charges against her father and spoke with police Oct. 31, according to the affidavit in the incest case. She told police she had been molested by her father between the ages of 11 and 16 until she moved out to live with her mother, police said.

When she was 18, the woman told her father that if she ever found out he was sexually abusing anyone else, she would report him to the police, the affidavit stated.

If convicted on all counts, the man could face more than 60 years in prison.
