HAGERSTOWN -- Firefighters and other officials on Tuesday said they rescued a young cow that slipped on ice off Showalter Road and was unable to gain its footing.

The heifer was spotted by I-81 travelers and someone called for help, according to a press release from the Humane Society of Washington County.

Kevin Blair of the Maugansville Goodwill Volunteer Fire Department, Ian "Magilla" Swisher, assistant chief of the department, and John Heizer, a veterinarian at Mid-Maryland Dairy Veterinarian, also responded and were able to get the animal to the safety of a barnyard, according to the release.
