Pa. man killed in I-81 crash in W.Va.

December 22, 2008

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A Pennsylvania man died early Sunday when the pickup truck he was driving rear-ended a tractor-trailer on Interstate 81, then slid into another in a high-speed collision, according to a West Virginia State Police press release.

Joseph Parrish Jr., 37, of North Cambria, Pa., was pronounced dead at City Hospital in Martinsburg from injuries received in the 2:40 p.m. accident, 1st Sgt. E.D. Burnett said.

The tractor-trailer, a 2009 Freightliner driven by Dallas Graham of Dudley, N.C., was stopped in the left lane of northbound I-81 near the 18-mile marker north of Martinsburg because of an earlier accident near the 19-mile marker, Burnett said.

After the 1998 Dodge pickup that Parrish was driving rear-ended the tractor-trailer, it slid to the right and crashed into a 2000 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by Suleiman Jama of Tempe, Ariz., Burnett said.

Graham, 40, and Jama, 31, were not injured, police said.

Traffic in the northbound lanes was stopped for 3 1/2 hours to clear the roadway and emergency responders had to extricate the victim from the truck, which had major front-end damage, Burnett said.

The accident was under investigation, Burnett said Monday morning.
