Fraundorfer promoted to colonel

Joseph J. Fraundorfer, nephew of Dodge and Joanne Bousum of Hagerstown and Harry and Pat Kelly of Greencastle, Pa., formerly of Altoona Pa., was promoted to colonel, U.S. Air Force, effective May 1.

He entered the Air Force in 1983 after graduating from Penn State University in Aerospace Engineering. He first served at Vandenberg AFB, Calif., as a space shuttle test engineer in the 6959th Space Shuttle Test Group. After marrying Lt. Cynthia Wright, U.S. Army JAG Corps, in 1985, he transferred to the Joint STARS airborne surveillance aircraft development program, Hanscom AFB, Mass. In JSTARS, Fraundorfer led the Systems Integration team responsible for integrating all new JSTARS airborne radar and communication systems aboard the aircraft. Fraundorfer currently serves with Headquarters Air Force, office of Irregular Warfare, Pentagon, Washington D.C.

During his career, Fraundorfer has deployed six times for military operations, most recently serving two consecutive combat tours in Iraq. Before that, Fraundorfer deployed in support of operations in Kosovo with Special Operations Command, Bosnia, with 31st Fighter Wing and Panama for Counter-Drug missions with U.S. Southern Command.

Fraundorfer is a graduate of Altoona High School, Roosevelt Junior High School and St. Mary's Elementary School. He is the son of William and Elsie Fraundorfer of Altoona. he also has brothers, Dr. William Fraundorfer of Altoona and Gary Fraundorfer of San Antonio, and sister, Jeanette Fagan of Brunswick, Ohio. Fraundorfer is son-in-law of Joy Wright of Imler, Pa. He resides in Bethesda Md.

Major awards and decorations include Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, National Defense Service Medal with service star, Iraq Campaign Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Air & Space Campaign Medal, Expert Marksmanship Ribbon and NATO Medal.
