Christmas cactus

December 22, 2008

Elizabeth Landon, a resident of Somerford Assisted Living on Sharpsburg Pike, is shown with her 52-year-old Christmas cactus.

The cactus is from the lower Eastern Shore and was started from blooms brought to her father by a neighbor during his final illness.

It came to live with Landon in Hagerstown in 1956 and has survived five moves since. She said it likes to be on her porch in the summer, dark nights in the fall, with little attention, not too much water and a few kind words now and then.
