CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- Lt. Col. retired R. Deane Smiley Jr., 78, formerly of 360-A Menno-Village, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at Shippensburg (Pa.) Health Care Center.

Born March 5, 1930, in Orange, Calif., he was the son of the late R. Deane and Elizabeth Beall Smiley.

He graduated from Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio.

He was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1953 with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was stationed in Alaska, Washington, Virginia, Germany, Arizona, did a tour in Korea, and two tours in Vietnam before retiring as a lieutenant colonel from New Cumberland Army Depot in 1975.

He attended Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring, where he was a deacon, trustee and choir member. He was involved in youth activities, including Sunday school and summer camps.


He was a member of Kiwanis Club and was a PIAA track official, working many local and state meets for several years.

He is survived by his wife, Megan Stuart Kipf Smiley, whom he married March 30, 1953; one daughter, Priscilla L. O'Donnell of Columbia, Md.; two sons, Robert D. III of West Chester, Pa., and Andrew D. of Burnt Cabins, Pa.; one brother, James A. of Austin, Texas; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Falling Spring Presbyterian Church. The Rev. William H. Harter will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Visitation will be Saturday from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, Chambersburg.
