CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- A Lovettsville, Va., man was killed Saturday after he climbed out of his car following an accident on U.S. 340 at Citizens Way and was struck by a southbound car, according to the Charles Town Police Department.

Mack D. Pierce, no age given, was pronounced dead at the scene by Jefferson County Medical Examiner Carole Spessert at 5:57 p.m., police said in a news release.

A preliminary investigation shows that a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Pierce pulled onto U.S. 340 from Citizens Way when it was struck from behind by a 2003 Toyota Avalon driven by Eric J. Staib of Allentown, Pa., according to the release.

Pierce's car went into the median and Staib's car went into the breakdown lane, police said.

Pierce got out of his car, entered the southbound lanes of U.S. 340 and was struck by a 2005 Honda Accord driven by Saundra A. Ash of Berryville, Va., the release said.
