From the looks of things, residents of the Tri-State region might have many answers to the oft-asked question, "What are you doing for New Year's?"

We've rounded up a healthy list of options for bringing in 2009 the right way, regardless of whether that might involve a martini, Moonbounce or music by carillon. It seems there's something for everyone.

Here's what we came up with:

The party scene

· Downtown Live New Year's Eve party

Music, food and other festivities at Duffy's on Potomac and its basement lounge, Ava. 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at 28 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown. Regional pop-punk band Vs. the Earth at Duffy's; DJ Sidekick at Ava.

HIGHLIGHT: At midnight, they're dropping money from the mezzanine and you get to keep what you grab.

· Concerts at Cancun Cantina West complex

An array of concerts at Hager Hall, Cancun Cantina West and Barefoot Bernies. The complex is at 901 Dual Highway, Hagerstown.

· At Hager Hall, hair metal band Kix with openers Dimestore Profit and The Blues Vultures. $35. Doors open at 7 p.m.

· At Cancun Cantina West, country band North of Mason-Dixon, $20. Doors open at 5 p.m., appetizer buffet from 7 to 11 p.m.

· At Barefoot Bernies, classic rockers John Zahn Band. Free admission, no reservations necessary. Full menu available and a champagne toast at midnight.

HIGHLIGHT: The festivities at Barefoot Bernies are meant to be family friendly, with New Year's programs on TV.

COST: Varies. $50 all-access ticket gets you into all venues. Kix tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com and can be upgraded to all-access at the club.

· New Year's Eve Party

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Music from DJ Rock'n Rick Rohn. 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., The Woods Resort's Mountaineer Room. The Woods Resort is at 1694 The Woods Road.

HIGHLIGHT: Cash bar and hors d'oeuvre menu available.

For theater fans

· Black-tie gala

FREDERICK, Md. - Black-tie benefit "Hooray for Hollywood" will raise money for the Weinberg Center for the Arts, 20 W. Patrick St. Music, dancing, gaming, food and an open bar - all with a vintage Hollywood theme. Starts at 8 p.m.

HIGHLIGHT: A portion of the ticket price is tax deductible.

COST: $150 per person; $500 VIP limousine and hotel package

· Comedy show

KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - New Year's Eve Make Me Laugh, live comedy show featuring Chad Beadle, CJ Burney, Lonnie Davis, Jay Camillion and others. Doors open at 8 p.m., show starts at 9. There's an after-party following the show. Georgia Boy Caf and Lounge, 3058 Charlestown Road.

HIGHLIGHT: Dinner buffet, champagne and giveaways.

COST: $25 per person, $45 per couple, or $100 per couple with hotel package

· Dinner theater double

The Washington County Playhouse and Dinner Theatre will present "Rock 'n' Roll Spectacular" and highlights from past shows. 6 p.m., at 44 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

HIGHLIGHT: The food. Lobster tail and prime rib are on the menu. Continental breakfast will be served after the midnight countdown.

· Piano concert with laughter

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Pianist and comedian Emile Pandolfi performs standards on the Majestic Theater's Steinway. 7 p.m., Majestic Theater, 25 Carlisle St., Gettysburg.

· Carillon recital

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Featuring carillonneur Charles Farris. Midnight New Year's Eve. Mercersburg Academy's chapel. The school is at 300 E. Seminary St.

HIGHLIGHT: Climb up the 70 steps in Barker Tower and watch the carillonneur play.

COST: Free admission

· Gospel concert

Secrest Memorial Sing, presented by the Morning Star Singers. 7 to 11 p.m. Heritage Academy auditorium, Walnut Point Road, west of Hagerstown. Additional performances by The Masters, The Gospel Strings and Driven For Him.

Things to do with your kids

· Drop the Anchor

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Perennial New Year's Eve celebration with a midnight anchor drop; celebration begins at 8 p.m. in downtown Shippensburg. DJ music and TVs display coverage of New Year's festivities.

HIGHLIGHT: Moonbounce and giant slide inflatables. Kids love those.

COST: Free admission

· First Night celebration

WINCHESTER, Va. - New Year's Eve festival in downtown Winchester. The schedule is loaded, but many activities start at 6 p.m. There will also be an "apple" drop. Go to www.firstnightwinchester.com for the full schedule.

HIGHLIGHT: It's billed as an alcohol-free, family-oriented celebration of the arts.

COST: $8 in advance; $12 after Dec. 24. Free admission for children 5 and younger.

· Party at Whitetail

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Hollywood-themed New Year's Eve party featuring The Charles Parker Band, a cover band from Baltimore. On top of winter sport activities, there will be a ball drop, fireworks and dinner. 7 p.m.,Whitetail Mountain Resort, 13805 Blairs Valley Road.

HIGHLIGHT: Visitors are encouraged to try and stump the band.
