Leitersburg Ruritan honors volunteers

December 21, 2008

The December meeting of the Leitersburg Ruritan Club was held in recognition of the volunteers who worked during the peach festival in appreciation of their services and to install incoming officers.

Volunteers included Troop 108, sponsored by the club, ladies from St. Paul's Lutheran Church and other volunteers from the local area.

At the meeting, the club was presented five gold awards from National Ruritan by Robert Markel, past zone governor. The awards were for social development, business and professions, citizenship and patriotism, environment and public service.

He also installed the 2009 officers and new board of directors.

The 2009 president will be James Green replacing Bruce Melton; and Susan Edwards-Doyle, vice president, replacing James Green. Lynn Bibbee continues as secretary and Tom McCall as treasurer. Bill Cross and Edwin Finfrock were installed as new board of directors joining Pete Cowan.

The club was very active this year. The peach festival in August was the most successful ever. The weather was ideal and the attendance exceeded expectations.

The club sent 35 packages of basic-need items not provided by the military for wounded soldiers when they first arrive at the field hospital in Iraq. These items included sweatshirts and sweatpants, underwear and toiletries.

The club presented Rudy Bears to the Leitersburg Fire Co., Smithsburg Police Department and Brook Lane Health Services. Rudy is the mascot of Ruritan National. The stuffed bears are presented to children who are exposed to traumatic experiences due to accident or illness.

The club also was busy carrying on with the regular services it provides, such as general maintenance of the common grounds, including Leitersburg Ruritan Park, funding for street lighting, conducting a Christmas lighting contest, giving Christmas baskets as needed and giving assistance to families in emergency situations.
