Man sought following traffic stop

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- West Virginia State Police were searching for a Hagerstown man who escaped on foot after a Saturday morning traffic stop on Interstate 81 in Berkeley County, according to a state police press release.

Trooper N.K. Campbell pulled over a Dodge Intrepid with Virginia license plates at 4:27 a.m. near Exit 20 north of Martinsburg for speeding, police said. The driver, Marquita Michelle Robinson, gave Campbell a false name, was taken into custody and placed in the police cruiser, police said.

A passenger identified himself as Charles Bishop, then told Campbell that was not his name, police said. Campbell was doing a pat down of the man when he felt a pistol in the man's front waistband. The man immediately fled across the interstate and west toward the Spring Mills Commons development, police said.

Campbell halted the foot chase and returned to the cruiser. Other troopers and the Maryland State Police Trooper 3 helicopter searched the area without finding the man, police said.

Police learned from Robinson that the man's name is Darryll Cash, and a National Crime Information Center check showed that he was wanted in Washington County and New York on drug and weapons charges.

Campbell was able to get a cell phone number for Cash from Robinson and West Virginia State Police communications in Romney, W.Va., traced it to an address in Hagerstown.

City police said Saturday night that the address for Cash was incorrect and he still was at large.
