Mail Call

December 19, 2008

"Two thoughts: For the woman whose daughter lives in Hagerstown, look into Angel Food Ministries. Lots of good food for fairly small amount. Then, for the person from Boonsboro who considers Caroline Kennedy a 'young girl,' you are in a time warp. She is now a mature adult, and has been in a political environment since she was 'this young girl.' You need to catch up with the times."

- Martinsburg, W.Va.

"I assume the woman who laughed so hard because the Iraqi reporter threw shoes at President Bush didn't lose a loved one over there. Whatever your feelings for the president are, he represents all Americans and the armed forces. This was an insult to all Americans, especially all the men and women in the armed services who died to give this man the right to do something he would have never been able to do under Saddam Hussein. It's an insult to all Americans. It's no laughing matter."

"I'd like to know why, at Boonsboro High School, for basketball games and sporting events in the gym, you're not allowed to take food into the gym, food or drinks. At the other schools like North, South, and Williamsport, you're allowed to do that, and they sell a lot more food and drink that benefits the sports teams."

"When it comes to our present economic problems, I harken back to the immortal words of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt: 'The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.' So we Americans must pull up our bootstraps, roll up our sleeves, and turn this economic problem around."

- Hagerstown

"I see where Caroline Kennedy wants to be the new New York senator. A lot of people are saying why should she be the senator? Some people are saying does she have the credentials to be the senator? My question is why does she think she deserves to be senator? She has never held any other public (office), and now all of a sudden she wants to be a senator. She hasn't paid her dues, but yet I guess she thinks her name is enough. Of course, the sad thing is if she would actually run in an election, she probably would win, but that's how she should obtain an office if she wants it, not get a special appointment just because her name is Kennedy."

"I was just browsing through the newspaper today, and I cannot believe that they are actually gonna spend money to bring business to the downtown area. Where have they been for the last several years, when the downtown has deteriorated? Now CVS is closing and leaving the area, but yet in this time of recession we're gonna spend all this money to bring business to the downtown."

- Hagerstown

"On Dec. 16 and Dec. 17, I see where the campaign of hatred by the person from Waynesboro continues, with his 'Barack Hussein Obama.' Like the name 'Hussein' is gonna scare all the American people. Come on, get off your hate pole. Try giving the man a chance. He's not even been put into office yet."

- Maugansville

"I would like to thank the person who found my wallet in the parking lot at Wal-Mart on Wednesday night. Thank you for turning it in, with all the money and credit cards. Nothing was taken. Thank you, and thank you for having Christmas spirit."

- Hagerstown

"I just love it how some of these people who dine out at restaurants in the area go into these restaurants acting as though they need to be waited on right away, and act as though they're special. They're not any more special than anybody else. Just because some of those people have more money in their pockets than others still doesn't make them better than anybody. They need to wait and be patient like others to be seated. I mean, some of these people I've noticed just go right on through the line and sit wherever they want to sit."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"Just wanted to thank The Herald-Mail for the best laugh I've had all year. On the front page, you have the article 'Two shot in city'. Right beside that, a picture of a wounded man being taken away by an ambulance crew member, and right below that, 'City plans to hire marketers.' This looks like a good marketing tactic to me."

- Hagerstown

"I just want to thank the lady who, on Monday morning around 11:30, was parked outside of Bed Bath and Beyond, and backed into my truck while I was in it and then drove away. I know that you had to feel this, because I was in the truck and I felt the jolt. So it was very nice of you to drive away, and I hope you have a wonderful holiday. You were parked in the handicapped (area)."

- Martinsburg, W.Va.

"The president-elect, at birth, was given the name Barack Hussein Obama. Being a draft dodger is something you choose to be as a young adult. If it hurts someone's feelings, so be it."

- Hagerstown
