Crash ties up traffic on I-81 near Marlowe

December 19, 2008

FALLING WATERS, W.Va. - Police and emergency personnel spent hours on the scene of a crash Thursday night in Berkeley County that involved a tractor-trailer and backed up traffic in both directions on Interstate 81, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Department.

The crash occurred in the southbound lanes near the Falling Waters/Marlowe exit at 5:49 p.m., and deputies still were on the scene about 10:30 p.m., according to a department employee. The crash also might have involved a passenger, and one or two people were taken from the site by ambulance, he said.

None of the investigating deputies were available to provide further details, he said, but interstate traffic was backed up for miles in either direction.

A Berkeley County 911 dispatcher said it was called in as an accident with entrapment. Inclement weather did not allow for medevac helicopters to fly in, and the injured were taken to Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, she said.

The dispatcher said shortly after 10 p.m. that southbound traffic still was stopped in the area of the crash and that there were secondary accidents resulting from the initial crash.
